Damascus, Apr.6 (SANA) The Director-General of the General Authority for the Management of Precious Metals in Syria, Musab al-Aswad, on Monday warned citizens against purchasing gold online or via unlicensed social media pages, calling on them to limit purchases to accredited and licensed shops to safeguard consumer rights and prevent fraud.
In a statement to SANA’s correspondent, al-Aswad stated that offers circulating on social media platforms often include misleading and unrealistic prices that do not reflect the actual market value of gold. He noted that some citizens have fallen victim to fraudulent schemes after buying gold coins or bullion from unreliable sources.
Al-Aswad outlined that ordinary consumer lack the expertise to distinguish genuine gold or detect sophisticated counterfeiting, making licensed retailers the primary guarantee for protecting buyers’ rights. He affirmed that an official invoice, duly stamped by both the association and the shop owner, constitutes the essential document ensuring authenticity and buyer protection.
He further added that responsibility for the quality and authenticity of gold lies with the seller when purchases are made through licensed outlets, thereby providing legal protection for consumers. He called on citizens to refrain from buying gold from unknown entities or online platforms to avoid fraud.
The Damascus Jewelers Association warned against the spread of this phenomenon, affirming that legitimate gold sales must be conducted exclusively through licensed shops with clear and formal invoices detailing weight, specifications, price, and date of purchase.
