HOUSEHOLDS are in line to save hundreds of pounds a year in a major shake-up of the energy market, The Sun can reveal.
Ministers are expected to pledge action to stop global gas prices pushing up household energy bills – as the Iran war piles pressure on families.
The Chancellor and Energy Secretary will soon signal plans to break the link that means Brits pay gas-level prices for electricity, even when power like wind and solar is doing much of the work.
Right now, households are hit whenever global gas prices surge because the most expensive fuel often sets the price for all electricity.
A Government source said the current system leaves Britain “too exposed” to global shocks and confirmed proposals are being prepared “very soon”.
Mr Miliband has already told Labour MPs that “unhitching” electricity prices from gas would be “complicated but possible”, with work ongoing behind the scenes.
Estimates being considered suggest breaking the link could save households hundreds of pounds a year.
The Green Party has been demanding a full commitment to decoupling, warning that simply “looking into” the policy is not enough.
The pressure comes as Labour faces growing jitters over rising energy costs and the risk of losing support to the Greens.
