The American Express Platinum Card® is one of the best travel cards available. It’s loaded with luxury benefits, including airport lounge access, hundreds of dollars in annual statement credit and both travel insurance and *purchase protections.

Those perks don’t come easy, though. In addition to paying the $895 annual fee (see rates and fees), you’ll have to meet some pretty stiff credit and income requirements.

American Express Platinum card credit score

To qualify for the American Express Platinum Card, you typically need good to excellent credit.

Even pristine credit won’t guarantee approval, though, since Amex considers other factors, including your income, history of balance transfers and the number of credit cards you have open.

You can prequalify for a Platinum card with just a soft credit inquiry, which won’t affect your credit score. If you appear to be a good candidate, you can proceed with the full application process, which includes a hard credit inquiry.

If your application is rejected, you can call Amex’s reconsideration line to see if there is something you can do to change that.

Improving your credit score

Your credit score is based on a variety of factors, but the biggest ones are your history of on-time payments and how much of your available credit you’re using.

To improve your credit, the best things you can do are consistently pay your bills on time and keep a healthy chunk of your credit limit untouched. Experts recommend keeping your credit utilization rate below 30%, although consumers with excellent credit usually stay below 10%.

One way to quickly lower your utilization is to request a credit limit increase. Just be sure not to increase your spending to match.
