The government has recently announced plans for new rules which will make it illegal for anyone to resell tickets for concerts, festivals, stand-up comedy, theatre, sport, and other live events at more than what they originally cost.
It is expected that this will make resale tickets around £37 cheaper on average, saving fans £112 million collectively per year.
In addition, service fees charged by resale platforms will be capped to prevent the price limit being undermined.
These measures aim to end the business model of industrial-scale ticket touting which sees scalpers snap up large amounts of tickets for events seeing high demand – often using automated bots – so that they can re-sell them at extortionate prices to desperate fans later on.
Swindon North MP Will Stone said: “Great news that the government are making entertainment more accessible by shutting down the scalpers and those that want to profit on event tickets.
“The government’s proposals will mean no one can resell tickets for more than the original price and bring in new punishments for anyone who does just that.
“The Government supports live entertainment for the fans not fraudsters.”
