Most-active gold futures gained some ground early in the day, before reversing course and ending the session at $4,065.40 a troy ounce, down 1.1%.
Prices remain elevated by historical standards: Gold only broke above $4,000 for the first time earlier this month.
Front-month gold futures fell 1.1% to $4,044.40. Silver futures were close to flat, gaining less than 0.1% to $47.461 an ounce. while platinum futures traded modestly higher.
