Sarvam AI has announced Sarvam Edge, a new on-device artificial intelligence platform designed to run directly on smartphones and laptops without depending on cloud servers or internet access. The company said the move aims to make AI faster, private, and usable across everyday consumer hardware.

Sarvam Edge is built around the idea that modern devices already have sufficient computing power to handle advanced models locally. By shifting inference to the device, the system removes network delays, improves reliability, and keeps user data entirely offline.

Speech recognition, translation, and text-to-speech on device

The platform includes multilingual speech recognition, speech synthesis, and translation models developed specifically for edge deployment. A single speech recognition model supports 10 major Indian languages with automatic language detection, allowing users to speak naturally without selecting languages manually.

Text-to-speech works across the same languages using a compact unified model that maintains consistent voice output, while the translation system supports 11 languages including English, enabling bidirectional translation across 110 language pairs. All of these functions operate without cloud connectivity.

Sarvam AI said that running everything locally ensures data privacy, eliminates per-query costs, and maintains consistent performance even in areas with weak or no network coverage.

Optimised for modern consumer hardware

Sarvam Edge models are designed to balance accuracy with low memory usage and fast response times. Real-time transcription processes speech faster than live audio, while translation delivers near-instant responses suitable for interactive applications.

The company highlighted that its models are optimised for current mobile processors and laptops, allowing full offline AI functionality without requiring specialised hardware or excessive storage.

Sarvam AI sees Sarvam Edge as a foundation for building voice-driven apps, real-time translation tools, assistive technologies, and intelligent devices that function reliably without internet access.

By embedding AI directly into consumer hardware, the company aims to expand AI usage into education, accessibility, finance, and everyday productivity while reducing dependence on cloud infrastructure.

Sarvam Edge represents Sarvam AI’s push toward making on-device intelligence a core part of future digital experiences rather than a service tied to constant connectivity.
