Thousands of vulnerable households could receive free fans, blackout curtains and help with their electricity bills this summer under a new £1million support scheme designed to protect people during extreme heat.
With temperatures regularly soaring during UK heatwaves, EDF has unveiled a new initiative that could provide up to 10,000 eligible customers with practical equipment to help keep their homes cool, alongside financial support towards running cooling appliances.
The energy supplier says the new Heatwave Relief Packs are aimed at people most at risk from hot weather, including older people, families with young children, disabled customers, those living with long-term health conditions and households struggling with rising living costs.
Each eligible household could receive support worth up to £100, including a combination of cooling products, energy bill help and practical advice.
Depending on individual circumstances, customers may receive:
- Energy-efficient desk or pedestal fans
- Handheld or neck fans
- Thermal blackout curtains
- Reflective window film
- Reusable water bottles
- Cooling towels
- Up to £20 in electricity credit or vouchers to help cover the cost of running fans
- Practical guidance on staying safe during periods of extreme heat
EDF says the scheme has been introduced because some vulnerable households are avoiding using fans and other cooling appliances over fears about higher electricity bills.
Why the energy bill support is needed
Extreme heat is becoming an increasing health concern across the UK.
According to the UK Health Security Agency, there were 1,311 heat-related deaths in England during summer 2024, with older people particularly at risk. More than 10,000 heat-associated deaths have been recorded across UK heat episodes since 2020.
Hot weather can worsen existing medical conditions and increase the risk of serious illnesses including heart attacks, strokes and breathing problems.
Joe Souto, Retail Director at EDF, said many vulnerable customers now face a “summer version” of the traditional winter dilemma: “We’re increasingly seeing a summer version of the ‘heating or eating’ dilemma. Some vulnerable customers are reluctant to use fans or other cooling appliances because they’re worried about the cost.
“Nobody should have to choose between protecting their health and managing their household budget.”
Who could qualify for free fans and energy bill help?
EDF says customers will be identified through:
- EDF customer support teams
- Referrals from charities and community organisations
- Trusted partner organisations
- Direct engagement with customers

Advice for staying cool during a heatwave
Alongside the free equipment, households will also receive advice including:
- Keeping curtains and blinds closed on windows facing the sun
- Opening windows when temperatures fall during the evening
- Drinking plenty of water
- Using fans efficiently
- Checking on elderly relatives, neighbours and friends during periods of extreme heat

Energy companies have traditionally focused on helping vulnerable customers stay warm during winter, but EDF says changing weather patterns mean support is now needed throughout the year.
