Agriculture sits at the intersection of some of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges. Food production contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation and biodiversity loss, while farmers themselves face growing exposure to extreme weather, resource scarcity and shifting environmental conditions.

For businesses across the food and agricultural value chain, addressing these challenges requires more than setting sustainability targets. New technologies, financing mechanisms and collaborative approaches are emerging to help organisations reduce environmental impacts, strengthen agricultural resilience and support the transition towards more sustainable food systems.

As part of edie’s in practice series, we explore five projects demonstrating different approaches to these challenges, from scaling hydrogen-based fertilisers to using real-world data to understand livestock methane emissions.
