President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s formal admission as the newest National Member Committee of the World Energy Council (WEC), describing the development as a significant endorsement of the country’s ongoing energy reforms and its growing leadership role in Africa’s energy sector.
The President said Nigeria’s admission into the century-old global energy network, which comprises more than 100 countries, marks a proud moment for the nation and positions it to play a more influential role in shaping international discussions on energy security, equity and sustainability.
Declaring that Nigeria intends to play a leading role in the global energy landscape, Tinubu said “Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate – to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions”.
In a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also congratulated the inaugural leadership of WEC Nigeria, led by Chairman, Mr Abdulrazaq Isa, OFR, and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Bala Wunti, as well as members of the pioneer Board drawn from across the energy value chain, regulatory institutions, industry associations, finance, academia and the Future Energy Leaders community.
President Tinubu described Isa as “a distinguished patriot and trailblazing industrialist” whose pioneering investments in indigenous refining and industrial energy have created new opportunities for Nigerian enterprise.
He also praised Wunti as “one of Nigeria’s finest energy strategists and reform champions”, noting that his more than three decades of service, characterised by integrity and strategic vision, had produced landmark reforms that significantly boosted national revenues and restored investor confidence in Nigeria’s energy sector.
According to the President, the composition of the inaugural Board, bringing together experienced industry leaders, regulators, finance experts and youth representatives, provides WEC Nigeria with the neutrality, credibility and balance required to succeed.
Tinubu further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting WEC Nigeria as a neutral, technology-agnostic platform for policy dialogue, investment mobilisation and innovation.
He also reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the World Energy Council’s headquarters in London and its global membership in advancing secure, affordable and sustainable energy for all.
The President wished the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and members of the inaugural Board success in what he described as a historic national assignment.
