Rwanda-based tin, tungsten and tantalum miner Trinity Metals has appointed Jaco Maritz CFO, with effect from September 1.

Maritz has over 25 years of international experience in the mining sector, spanning project development, operations and corporate finance. He joins Trinity from Khoemacau Copper Mining, owned by MMG, where he held the role of senior financial adviser.

Prior to that, he spent over five years as Group CFO of Khoemacau, leading the finance function through the construction of the Khoemacau copper mine, in Botswana, and through the company’s subsequent sale to MMG for about $1.9-billion in 2024.

Between 2018 and 2019, Maritz was CFO of London-listed Acacia Mining, where he was involved in Barrick Mining Corp’s $1.2-billion takeover of the company. Prior to that, he held various senior finance roles at Barrick Gold Corporation, which is now Barrick Mining, in Toronto and Johannesburg.

“On behalf of the board, I am delighted to welcome Jaco to Trinity Metals and to be working alongside him again. Jaco’s many years of international mining finance experience, including both public and private CFO roles at Acacia Mining and Khoemacau, will add tremendous value to Trinity’s next phase of development.

“This is an important time for the company as we execute our strategic growth plans, which will further establish and enhance our role as a key supplier of critical minerals to international markets. Jaco’s record and expertise will be hugely additive to the executive team as Trinity works to realise its near- and long-term objectives,” comments Trinity CEO Peter Galeta.

“Trinity has built a strong platform as Rwanda’s leading producer of conflict-free tin, tungsten and tantalum, and I look forward to working with Peter and the wider team to help the company advance its critical minerals portfolio,” Maritz adds.

Trinity’s Nyakabingo tungsten mine concession of 1 600 ha is estimated to contain over 30 000 t of recoverable tungsten, with potential to grow the resource substantially at depth, where a deep drilling programme is currently under way.

Trinity was the first operating mine in Africa to secure financial support from the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) when it received $3.87-million in technical assistance funding in June 2024.

Trinity’s major shareholder, TechMet, is part-owned by the US government through the DFC.
