CME Group’s newest crypto futures, tied to Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Uniswap’s UNI token, are set for an October 19 debut. The excitement that greeted the announcement had mostly evaporated by then.
According to Santiment data, Bitcoin Cash futures opened with open interest similar to where it sat before CME revealed the listing.
What CME is actually offering
CME announced on September 22, 2026 that BCH and UNI futures would begin trading on October 19, subject to regulatory approval. The additions bring the exchange’s crypto futures lineup to 11 products, alongside its existing Bitcoin and Ether contracts.
Both new products are cash-settled against CME CF reference prices. No one ever touches an actual coin. Traders can hedge or speculate on price moves without holding the underlying tokens or managing a wallet.
Each asset comes in two contract sizes. For Bitcoin Cash, the standard contract (ticker BCA) covers 250 BCH, while the Micro version (MCH) covers 25 BCH.
The UNI contracts are much larger in token terms. The standard UNI contract represents 10,000 UNI, and the Micro contract (MUN) represents 1,000 UNI.
Both sets of contracts are eligible for block trades and Basis Trade at Index Close (BTIC) variants. Block trades let large players negotiate sizable deals privately rather than on the open order book. BTIC lets traders lock in a futures position priced relative to the day’s closing index level, which is useful for funds that benchmark to that close.
The rally that didn’t stick
BCH’s price jumped by approximately 25-30% in the immediate aftermath of the announcement. BCH open interest nearly doubled to around $295 million.
By October 18, the day before the scheduled launch, open interest had slid back to approximately 560,000 BCH, close to where it stood before the announcement.
UNI’s reaction was quieter from the start. The token saw a more subdued response to the announcement and didn’t hold its price momentum for long.
Why the UNI listing could matter more than the price action
Pending ETF applications for the token require a six-month history of futures trading, according to the research findings.
A regulated CME futures market is the kind of track record that requirement contemplates. If UNI contracts trade from October 19 onward, the clock on that six-month history effectively starts ticking.
The scale of CME’s crypto business
CME’s crypto futures and options activity in the first half of 2026 averaged 279,800 contracts, representing $8.3 billion in notional value.
What this means for traders and the market
The immediate lesson from Bitcoin Cash is about timing. The meaningful price and positioning moves happened on the announcement, not the launch.
The open interest round trip, from a near-doubling to around $295 million back down to roughly 560,000 BCH, points to short-term speculative positioning rather than durable new demand.
For UNI, the key thing to watch is the six-month window tied to ETF applications. Steady futures trading would build the history those filings need.
There’s also the regulatory caveat. CME framed the launch as subject to approval. Traders should watch early volume and open interest on the new contracts, particularly the Micro versions, for signs of whether demand extends beyond the largest players.
