US stock futures moved higher on Monday as investors prepared for a week of corporate earnings announcements, central bank policy decisions and developments affecting international financial markets.

Oil prices declined following reports of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran, while French government bonds recovered some ground after a period of political and social uncertainty.

Investors were also assessing the outcome of Brazil’s presidential election, where Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a fourth term following a closely contested vote.

Corporate earnings will be a major focus throughout the week, with Verizon (NYSE:VZ) among the companies scheduled to report on Monday.

S&P 500, Nasdaq and Dow Futures Advance

US equity futures indicated a higher opening for Wall Street following declines across the three major stock indices on Friday.

At 04:43 ET (08:43 GMT), S&P 500 futures had gained 23 points, or 0.3%, while Nasdaq 100 futures were up 64 points, or 0.2%.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advanced 241 points, equivalent to 0.5%.

The gains followed a session in which US equities declined amid concerns about technology investment spending, interest rate expectations and geopolitical developments.

Investors have been examining the financial implications of large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure investment, particularly the use of debt financing and the time required for projects to generate returns.

Expectations that interest rates could remain elevated for longer have also influenced equity valuations.

Meanwhile, rising oil prices and reports of possible renewed military action involving the United States and Iran contributed to market uncertainty during the previous week.

US Treasury securities attracted demand as investors assessed risks across global financial markets, although the extent to which the buying reflected a shift towards lower-risk assets remains subject to interpretation.

Oil Prices Decline Following Reports of US-Iran Diplomatic Contacts

International oil prices fell on Monday after reports that Qatari mediators had visited Tehran over the weekend to explore ways of reducing tensions between Iran and the United States.

Brent crude futures declined 1.6% to $114.92 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate futures fell 2.0% to $101.25 per barrel.

The declines followed a weekly increase of more than 6% in Brent crude, which recorded its highest weekly closing level since 2022.

Recent media reports suggested that US President Donald Trump was considering further military action against Iran following the November midterm elections.

Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Trump said it was “getting to be decision time” regarding whether Washington would undertake additional strikes or pursue an agreement with Tehran.

The comments followed earlier statements about possible military operations, which prompted Iranian officials to warn of retaliatory measures.

Regional tensions have also been affected by exchanges of attacks involving Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

These developments have raised concerns about potential disruptions to energy production and transportation in the Middle East.

The reported diplomatic contacts contributed to Monday’s decline in oil prices, although no agreement resolving the tensions had been announced.

Verizon Earnings Begin a Week of US Corporate Results

Corporate earnings are expected to influence US equity trading throughout the week, with a substantial number of S&P 500 companies scheduled to release quarterly results.

Approximately one-quarter of companies in the index have reported their latest earnings so far.

According to analysts at Vital Knowledge, the results published to date indicate continued underlying demand, while cost management and price increases have contributed to company profitability.

Investors will be examining whether these trends continue across the broader market.

Technology company earnings will receive particular attention following recent concerns about spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Analysts and investors are assessing whether large capital expenditure programmes and associated financing costs are affecting earnings, cash flow and future investment plans.

Verizon (NYSE:VZ) is scheduled to report before the opening of US markets on Monday.

The telecommunications company operates in a competitive environment that includes established providers AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as newer communications services associated with SpaceX.

Its results will provide updated information about operating performance and competitive conditions in the US telecommunications market.

French Bond Yields Ease After Moody’s Maintains Sovereign Rating

French government bond yields edged lower on Monday as financial markets assessed developments in the country’s political and fiscal situation.

The decline followed a weekend during which large-scale demonstrations appeared to subside, although labour organisations have called for further protests.

The demonstrations, initially associated with student-led action, have expanded to include concerns about wages, living costs and public services.

Labour representatives have called for additional demonstrations next weekend and a nationwide strike on 5 November.

France’s financial markets also responded to a decision by Moody’s on Friday to maintain the country’s Aa3 sovereign credit rating.

The decision came despite expectations among some market participants that the agency might revise its assessment.

French government bond futures rose on Monday, while the euro strengthened.

The yield on France’s benchmark 10-year government bond declined, indicating a recovery in bond prices.

Investors continue to monitor fiscal policy, public borrowing requirements and the potential economic effects of further industrial action.

Lula Wins Brazilian Presidential Election With 51.8% of Votes

Brazil’s presidential election also attracted attention in international financial markets after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a fourth presidential term.

According to figures reported by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Lula received approximately 51.8% of votes, compared with 48.2% for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, with 99% of ballots counted.

The result followed an election in which Bolsonaro had led after the first round.

Bolsonaro disputed the outcome and called for the vote to be annulled, alleging that a Supreme Court decision to extend voting hours in some areas had affected the process.

The allegations were reported as claims by Bolsonaro, rather than established findings of electoral irregularities.

Analysts at Deutsche Bank said the result differed from the outcome increasingly reflected in financial market positioning, where investors had anticipated a Bolsonaro victory.

An exchange-traded fund listed in Tokyo and tracking Brazilian equities declined during Asian trading.

Capital Economics analysts also revised their assessment of Brazil’s near-term financial market outlook following the election.

In a research note, the firm said Lula’s victory could affect expectations for fiscal reform and economic growth, and anticipated pressure on the Brazilian real, equities and government bonds.

These assessments represent analysts’ forecasts rather than confirmed future market movements.

Investors Monitor Monetary Policy and Geopolitical Risks

The coming trading week will bring together several developments relevant to global financial markets.

US corporate earnings will provide updated information about business profitability, consumer demand and investment spending, particularly in the technology sector.

Central bank decisions will also influence expectations for borrowing costs and economic conditions.

At the same time, investors will continue to assess diplomatic developments involving the United States and Iran, the outlook for international oil supplies and political developments in France and Brazil.

Monday’s gains in US equity futures and the decline in crude oil prices reflected the market movements recorded ahead of these events.
