Today’s day trading profit/loss: +12,350 yen
Today was a day where my thinking about day trading changed a little.
Until now, I have been day trading mainly in AI and semiconductor-related stocks such as Advantest and Tokyo Electron.
The reason is simple.
I thought that because the price movements are large, there are many opportunities to make a profit.
However, when I actually continued trading, things didn’t go as planned.
If I buy thinking it will go up, it goes down.
If I sell thinking it will go down, it goes up.
While I am thinking carefully, the stock price moves, and when I enter in a hurry, it is already too late.
I have repeated this experience many times.
But today, I had a slightly different discovery.
That was trading Nintendo (7974).
■ Today’s trading results
Today’s realized profit/loss was +12,350 yen.
The main results by stock are as follows.
Stock Realized Profit/Loss
Nintendo (7974) +23,560 yen
Taiyo Yuden (6976) -12,670 yen
Advantest (6857) +1,460 yen
Hitachi (6501) +4,660 yen
NEC (6701) +3,540 yen
Total +12,350 yen
*Includes both cash and margin trading. Realized profit/loss before tax.
I was able to secure a profit of 23,560 yen with Nintendo.
On the other hand, I am also seeing losses with Taiyo Yuden.
It is not to say that you can win with anything just by changing stocks.
Even so, in today’s Nintendo trade, I had a different feeling than before.
■ I thought that the faster the price movement, the more I could earn
Until now, the stocks I have preferred to monitor are AI and semiconductor-related stocks.
Advantest, Tokyo Electron, Kioxia, Fujikura, and so on.
These stocks generate large price movements depending on the market environment.
While you can aim for profits in a short time, if your judgment is delayed, losses can also swell in an instant.
Especially in my case, I check the chart, look at the volume, be conscious of the VWAP, and think about the entry timing.
While I am doing that, the stock price moves.
As a result, my entry is delayed.
Trying to make up for that, I jump in recklessly.
And then, I cut my losses.
With this, no matter how large the price movement is, it is meaningless.
Large price movements and being able to make a profit are completely different things.
■ What I realized by trading Nintendo
Today’s Nintendo trade was something I could approach relatively calmly.
Of course, Nintendo’s stock price can also move significantly.
It is by no means a stock with small price movements at all times.
However, in my feeling today, it was easier to make judgments than when I am chasing the usual AI and semiconductor-related stocks. It feels like it moves according to technical analysis. Also, the price movement is slower compared to stocks like Kioxia.
This sense of speed was extremely significant.
There is no need to panic every time the stock price moves.
There is time to check the shape of the chart.
I can think about whether or not to enter.
And above all, it is easier to trade with a slightly longer time horizon.
Technical trading is easier to perform when the time horizon is extended.
Until now, I have mainly focused on scalping, where I would lock in profits in a matter of seconds to minutes.
However, from now on, I want to master trading that captures solid price ranges over a slightly longer time horizon.
In that sense, today’s experience with Nintendo was a good one.
■ I also want to look at defensive stocks and stocks with moderate price movements
Until now, I have inevitably been drawn to stocks with large trading values and volumes, and volatile price movements.
However, I am thinking of changing my criteria for selecting stocks a little from now on.
For example, stocks with defensive characteristics or large-cap stocks with relatively moderate price movements.
Of course, just because a stock is defensive does not mean its price movement will always be small.
Also, I do not consider Nintendo itself to be a typical defensive stock.
What is important is not the name of the industry, but whether the day’s price movement suits my trading style I think.
Instead of just chasing volatility, I will look for stocks that allow me to secure time to think.
Isn’t this also a strategy?
■ From scalping to a slightly longer time horizon
Ever since I started day trading, there is something I have always felt was a challenge.
That is, I cannot let my profits grow.
When I make a small profit, I lock it in immediately.
Conversely, when I have a loss, I find it hard to cut it.
It is a classic case of small profits and large losses.
Especially with highly volatile stocks, a few seconds of judgment can significantly affect the outcome.
I do not yet have that level of skill.
That is why I am thinking of extending my time horizon a bit from now on.
For example, instead of closing a position in a few minutes, I will hold it as long as the market trend continues.
Of course, this does not mean that just holding for a long time is enough.
I will cut losses if the basis for my entry collapses.
If the conditions for profit growth persist, I will not sell in a panic.
Extending your time horizon and leaving unrealized losses alone are completely different things.
I want to learn that difference through my actual trading from here on out.
■ Even with experience in 6 billion yen real estate investments, I am a beginner in stocks
I have previously experienced real estate investments totaling approximately 6 billion yen and have been involved in managing multiple companies and M&A.
In company acquisitions, I have seen figures in the tens and hundreds of millions of yen.
However, my day trading profit today was 12,350 yen.
I am happy to have made a profit of 23,560 yen on Nintendo.
Considering the scale of real estate investment, this is a truly small amount.
However, this is my current ability.
And I do not take these small profits lightly.
In the past, I have experienced significant losses due to investing too much capital and delaying my stop-loss orders.
For now, I am prioritizing keeping my lot sizes small and mastering the techniques.
First, find the stocks that suit me.
Next, reproducible entry points must be mastered.
Then, let profits run and keep losses small.
I believe increasing lot sizes can wait until after that.
Running a company and day trading are completely different skills.
Even if I can think about the timing for selling a company, the timing for selling stocks is still difficult.
■ The biggest gain today is not the 12,350 yen
Of course, I am happy to have made a profit.
However, the real gain today is not the amount of money.
Perhaps I find it easier to trade stocks that allow me to think calmly.
That is what I realized.
Since it is only one day of experience, I do not intend to draw a conclusion from this alone.
Nintendo may not always suit me either.
Even so, it is certain that I felt a different response than before.
From now on, I would like to monitor stocks in various industries, rather than sticking only to AI and semiconductor-related stocks.
Instead of aiming for instantaneous profits with fast-moving stocks, I will enter calmly and aim to grow profits over a slightly longer time frame.
I will aim for that kind of trading style.
■ The man aiming for 10 billion yen, today’s result is +12,350 yen
My ultimate goal is to reach 10 billion yen in assets.
While aiming for such a big goal, my day trading profit for today was 12,350 yen.
Compared to the figure of 10 billion yen, this profit is almost negligible.
However, rather than failing by moving large amounts of money at once like I used to, this is enough for now.
In fact, discovering my own strengths in trading little by little, as I did today, might be more valuable in the future.
The man aiming for 10 billion yen, 12,350 yen closer today.
The road is still long, but I will build up my skills without rushing.
I will do my best again tomorrow.
