AS THE expansion of renewable energy projects across Scotland, and Shetland, continues at pace, increasingly research is being conducted to find how the energy transition could be done in a fairer way.
The latest example is carried out by Edinburgh University student Ellen Ormesher, who hopes to speak to local people while in Shetland from next week onwards.
Ormesher, who is known for her work as an investigative journalist covering climate and the environment, has assured participants that all data collected will be solely used for academic purposes.
The MSc student in environment and development at the university’s School of Geoscience has chosen Shetland as her primary case study, and hopes to gain more understanding of how attitudes to wind farms have changed over time with the development of new projects.
She is interested to learn what factor those feelings such as economic, environmental, cultural, or aesthetic considerations.
“Being strongly for or against specific wind farms, or wind farms as a concept, is not necessary. All opinions, be they strong or ambivalent, are encouraged,” she said.
She added that her research aims to “deepen academic understandings of how communities in Scotland experience energy development, and may inform approaches to more equitable renewable energy planning in Scotland”.
Ormesher will be in Shetland from 10 June.
